Lionel Smit, in collaboration with .M Contemporary Sydney, presents the solo exhibition EMERGE. Smit explores the emergence of identity that is constructed through a process of layering and fragmentation on the canvas. His portraits transpire a hybrid identity evoked by emotion through swaths of colour that assemble the portraits and figures in his works. The exhibition ran from 1 to 20 September 2017, showcasing his portraiture, sculpture and silkscreens.
Lionel is representative of South African contemporary art and talent abroad. He currently has public sculptures exhibited as part of group exhibition Influx 2017 Outdoor in Providence, Rhodes Island, United States. This is part of The Avenue Concept consecutive public art exhibitions realised by the Cynthia Reeves gallery. Exposed 2017, is a group show with internationally renowned sculptors, including Smit‘s work, curated by Rachel Moore, Director and Curator and Stephanie Walker, Assistant Curator at the Helen Day Art Center in Vermont, United States.
